Meet the experts- Karen Blacker

Meet the experts- Today I have been talking to Karen Blacker our sundries expert. Many of you will know Karen, she has worked here for 15 years and is sister to our Managing Director Andrew Jones.

Like Andrew, Karen’s journey into the flower industry started at an early age accompanying her dad Haydn on his flower round, she remembers when as a child they couldn’t get in the bathroom at Christmas as the Poinsettias were in there!  She loved watching the florists working and got herself a Saturday job in the Florist at Bennet’s Nursery, Frome.

When Karen left school she worked at Eileen’s Florist

Bath and attended the floristry course at Bath College, training under Hazel Bushell and Jean Owen. She achieved City & Guilds levels 1, 11 and 111. When Eileen’s Florist shut down she went to work at Hodges of Shepton Mallet where she stayed for eight years. Once she started her family she still returned to Hodges to help out occasionally.

Karen started at Flowervision 15 years ago as an all rounder, serving customers, taking orders, customers care and then moved on to work with Matt (Moley) to set up the sundries department and as it grew Karen took over ordering to free Matt up to focus on plants. She says it is a real family affair, both of her children have worked here as have Andrews. When Karen’s daughter Lauren came to help out she ended up staying for 4 years!

There have been many changes since Karen joined the business, manual – automated/computerized, dedicated picking room, plant room and packing area. She has worked all of the different shifts over her time here and really enjoyed the early morning starts, 2.30am as she loves working with the team and the comradery is great.

These days Karen uses her extensive knowledge to look after customers and help run the sundries department, so don’t hesitate to contact her if you have any sundries questions! Karen says she is thrilled that we are still serving some of her dads customers to this day!
